Packing Tips

How to Pack Fragile Items for a Move

Fragile items are damaged when impact, movement or pressure reaches the item during handling and transport. Good packing reduces those forces by using the right container, enough cushioning and a box that does not allow the contents to move freely.

Use the right size box and enough cushioning

A box that is much too large allows items to move. A box that is too small can put direct pressure on fragile contents. Wrap items individually where appropriate, protect the bottom and sides of the box, and fill empty spaces so the contents remain stable.

Heavy items should not sit on top of delicate items. Keep weight balanced so the box can be lifted without suddenly shifting.

Treat glass, mirrors and artwork differently

Glassware usually needs individual wrapping and separation. Mirrors and framed artwork benefit from rigid protection and corner protection. Large glass or artwork should be discussed with the mover before the day so the team can confirm whether special packing or crating is required.

Do not rely on a label alone. Writing FRAGILE helps identify the box, but the protection inside the box is what reduces damage.

Prepare electronics carefully

Back up important data before moving computers or storage devices. Remove loose accessories, keep cables organized and protect screens from pressure. Original manufacturer packaging can be useful when it is still in good condition and designed for the specific device.

Avoid packing electronics where moisture or heavy compression is likely. Tell the moving team about unusually sensitive equipment.

Keep irreplaceable valuables under your control

Documents, jewelry, cash, medication, passports and small irreplaceable items are better kept with you unless there is a specific reason to include them in the move. A moving box is designed for household goods, not for personal custody of critical valuables.

Create a small essentials bag so you do not have to open multiple boxes immediately after arrival.

Key takeaway

Fragile packing works when the item cannot move freely, cannot take direct pressure and is clearly identified. Tell the mover about special items before moving day so the packing plan can match the risk.
